NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the Ukraine security pact includes two layers: a stronger Ukrainian military and Western commitments deterring Russian aggression. He emphasized NATO’s “unwavering” support during a Kyiv visit and promised funding to maintain US arms supplies. After meeting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Rutte confirmed Donald Trump assured Washington’s involvement in guarantees. He stressed that US, European, and Ukrainian cooperation must deter Vladimir Putin from attacking again. Rutte added discussions continue about troop deployments, intelligence sharing, and naval or aerial presence. Zelenskyy insisted Ukraine requires lasting security guarantees for future generations.
Trump Pushes for Zelenskyy-Putin Talks
Donald Trump met Vladimir Putin in Alaska, then Zelenskyy with European leaders in Washington. He said the next step involves a Ukraine-Russia summit. Zelenskyy repeated his readiness to meet Putin, but Moscow continues rejecting the idea. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told NBC News no meeting is planned, saying the summit agenda remains unprepared. The White House still searches for a location and date, but the Kremlin signalled no expectation of imminent talks.
Zelenskyy Accuses Moscow of Blocking Diplomacy
Speaking beside Rutte, Zelenskyy accused Russia of obstructing any trilateral meeting. He said Ukraine accepts dialogue while Moscow fears negotiations. “The war must end at the leadership level, but Russia prevents this,” Zelenskyy said. He urged partners to pressure Moscow with stronger sanctions if it rejects diplomacy. Zelenskyy concluded Ukraine remains ready for productive talks, while demanding international action to push Russia toward negotiations.
