Surgeons at UZ Leuven have achieved a genuine world first, successfully using donor tissue from the abdominal wall to repair complex defects in the chest without requiring patients to take immune suppressing medication, the Belgian hospital confirmed this week. The breakthrough builds on years of pioneering transplant work at the hospital and opens new possibilities for patients whose injuries or surgeries have left them with defects that conventional repair techniques cannot fix.
The technique relies on a small piece of tough connective tissue taken from the abdominal wall of a deceased donor, offering what doctors describe as a genuine new solution for patients where classic reconstruction methods fall short. Thoracic and transplant surgeon Laurens Ceulemans, who coordinates the hospital’s abdominal wall transplant program, has led the development of this expanding application for donor tissue that was originally used for a much narrower purpose.
The Leuven story began several years ago with transplants of the abdominal wall itself. In 2020, Ceulemans helped perform Belgium’s first abdominal wall transplant, giving two patients who had undergone intestinal transplants a new abdominal wall sourced from a deceased donor. At that time, those patients still required immune suppressing medication as part of their broader intestinal transplant treatment, since the abdominal wall tissue was transplanted alongside other organs requiring such suppression.
What makes this latest breakthrough particularly significant is that surgeons have now performed similar abdominal wall tissue transplants without any immune suppressing medication whatsoever, a first for this type of procedure. Simultaneously, doctors have expanded use of the donor tissue beyond the abdomen entirely, successfully applying it to repair complex defects in the chest cavity, a application never previously attempted with this specific technique.
Since the program began, UZ Leuven has now treated more than eighty patients using donor abdominal wall tissue, according to the hospital. Beyond abdominal and chest wall reconstruction, surgeons have successfully applied the technique to repair the diaphragm, the pericardium surrounding the heart, and even complex defects in the pelvis and other body parts that have historically proven exceptionally difficult to reconstruct using conventional surgical methods.
The significance of avoiding immune suppressing medication cannot be overstated for patients undergoing these kinds of reconstructive procedures. Immune suppressing drugs carry substantial risks, including increased vulnerability to infections and certain cancers, along with a range of other side effects that patients must manage for as long as they carry the transplanted tissue. A technique that achieves successful tissue integration without requiring this medication represents a meaningful improvement in the safety profile of these already complex procedures.
UZ Leuven has built its reputation over decades as a pioneering center for transplant medicine, with its broader transplant program dating back to 1963. The hospital expects to perform its ten thousandth organ transplant sometime this autumn, a milestone that would make it the first hospital in Belgium to reach that particular figure, further cementing its status as one of Europe’s leading centers for transplant innovation and surgical breakthroughs.
As this new application of donor abdominal tissue continues to develop, surgeons at Leuven say they will keep exploring additional uses for the technique in treating other difficult to repair body defects. For patients facing complex reconstructive challenges that conventional techniques cannot adequately address, this latest breakthrough offers a genuinely new therapeutic option, one that adds to Leuven’s long track record of advancing what is medically possible in the field of transplant and reconstructive surgery.
