The United States marked the 250th anniversary of its independence with a large public celebration in Brussels, bringing together political leaders, diplomats, military personnel, and thousands of guests to highlight the long-standing partnership between the United States and Europe.
The event took place on Sunday at Parc du Cinquantenaire, a landmark park located near the headquarters of several European Union institutions. Organizers estimated that nearly 10,000 people attended the celebration, which featured cultural activities, live performances, and a nighttime drone and fireworks display.
Many American military personnel stationed in Belgium also joined the event, which carried the theme, “250 Years of Independence: Building Our Future Together.”
Visitors participated in a variety of activities celebrating American culture. The program included baseball demonstrations, line dancing, a mechanical bull, live music, and a ceremonial military flyover.
United States Ambassador to Belgium Bill White opened the event before an audience that included Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
In a recorded video message, President Donald Trump thanked those attending the celebration and reflected on the long history of cooperation between Belgium and the United States.
Trump highlighted the shared military history of both countries, noting that American and Belgian forces fought together during the First and Second World Wars. He also referred to the thousands of American service members buried in Belgium, describing their sacrifice as a reminder of the importance of protecting freedom.
Speaking during the ceremony, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the close relationship between Europe and the United States. He described the United States as a lasting symbol of freedom and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between allies.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also spoke about the strength of the transatlantic partnership. She said the relationship had helped shape decades of cooperation and stability while praising the scale of the anniversary celebration.
While the official event focused on friendship and shared history, it also drew criticism from several activist organizations and local residents.
The celebration was held inside a section of the public park that required invitations to enter, leading some residents to question the temporary restrictions placed on public access.
Security measures around the venue were extensive, with police establishing controlled access points and monitoring nearby demonstration areas throughout the day.
Several protest groups organized demonstrations outside the security perimeter. Environmental organization Greenpeace displayed a large banner in Brussels’ Grand Place criticizing current global challenges and questioning the significance of the celebration.
Other organizations, including Extinction Rebellion, Indivisible Belgium, and Rise for Climate, also staged protests. Demonstrators expressed concerns about the event’s use of public space and criticized what they described as the commercialization of the anniversary.
Some protesters also questioned the role of private funding in organizing the celebration.
Responding to questions about the demonstrations, Ambassador White said he was not fully aware of the protesters’ specific concerns but expressed interest in understanding their views.
White also discussed the financing of the event, saying organizers had raised more than five million dollars from over 220 donors. According to the ambassador, contributions came from American and Belgian companies as well as private individuals.
The list of sponsors included several multinational corporations and Belgian businesses that supported the anniversary celebration.
The event took place at a time when the United States and European allies continue to discuss issues involving trade, defense, security, and international cooperation. Despite ongoing policy differences on some matters, speakers emphasized the importance of maintaining strong transatlantic ties.
