Rescue attempt in dangerous waters ends with multiple deaths on Egypt’s coast
Alexandria, Egypt – A day at the beach turned deadly when seven young people drowned in the Mediterranean Sea west of Alexandria.
Witnesses said a group of around 150 students was present when one female student entered the water on Saturday, ignoring a red flag that indicated swimming was forbidden due to rough seas. She soon found herself in distress.
Several of her peers entered the water in an attempt to assist, but many were caught by the powerful waves. Officials confirmed that six teenagers and young adults, aged between 15 and 21, did not survive.
The following day, emergency teams discovered another victim, a man about 20 years old who had also attempted to help, according to local media outlet Al-Masri al-Jum. In addition, 24 others who had struggled in the water required medical attention.
The tragedy highlights the ongoing risks along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, where strong currents and turbulent conditions frequently make swimming unsafe.
