Deadly Explosion in Southern Moscow
Russian authorities are investigating a car explosion that killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov in Moscow on Monday morning. Sarvarov, who headed the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, died from injuries sustained in the blast, according to the Investigative Committee. Russian media reported that the explosion occurred in a parking lot near a residential building in the south of the capital, prompting an immediate security response and the opening of a criminal case.
Investigation and Suspected Motive
The Investigative Committee said it is examining the circumstances surrounding Sarvarov’s death, though officials have not yet identified a motive. Investigators are considering several possibilities, including the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said. She added that authorities are carrying out forensic and explosives examinations, questioning witnesses and eyewitnesses, and reviewing surveillance camera footage as part of the probe.
Ukraine Yet to Respond
Kyiv has not commented on the allegations or the investigation into Sarvarov’s death. The lack of an official response comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as Moscow continues to face a series of high-profile attacks inside its territory.
Pattern of Targeted Killings
Sarvarov’s killing marks the latest in a string of deadly incidents involving senior Russian military figures in Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. In December 2024, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov died after a remotely detonated scooter exploded, while Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed by a car bomb in April. Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for either attack, leaving questions about accountability and security unanswered.
