A car exploded near New Delhi’s historic Red Fort on Monday, killing at least eight people and injuring several others. The blast triggered a massive fire that scorched multiple vehicles parked nearby. Police confirmed the casualties and launched an investigation into the cause. Officers cordoned off the area while emergency crews battled the blaze.
Fire Crews Race to Control the Blaze
Firefighters rushed to the scene after reports of an explosion near one of the Red Fort metro station gates. The city’s fire service deployed several engines to contain the flames and prevent further damage. Thick smoke filled the air as rescue teams pulled victims from the wreckage and cleared nearby vehicles. The fire damaged several cars before responders managed to extinguish it.
Investigators Probe Cause of the Explosion
Police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi confirmed that at least eight people died and several others suffered injuries. “We are investigating the cause of the blast,” he said. Authorities have not yet determined whether the explosion was accidental or deliberate.
The Red Fort, once an imperial palace and now a major tourist landmark, remained sealed off as officers examined debris. Local media showed images of twisted metal and charred vehicles behind police tape. A nearby resident told NDTV he heard “a window-shattering sound” before flames engulfed several cars.
