Chelsea’s hierarchy remain fully behind Enzo Maresca’s rotation and recruitment strategy despite criticism following the team’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Qarabag.
The Italian made seven changes to his lineup in Baku, prompting questions about his selection, but club leaders view his approach as a long-term plan to maintain freshness and reduce injuries during a demanding season.
Chelsea’s squad depth was built precisely for this purpose, and senior figures believe regular rotation is key to keeping players sharp across four competitions. Injuries to Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill, and Benoît Badiashile forced further adjustments, while Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, and João Pedro were all carrying knocks.
Maresca initially benched Caicedo and Fernández to manage workload, but was forced to introduce the Ecuadorian early after Roméo Lavia suffered a thigh injury. Despite the setback and the 5,000-mile trip to Azerbaijan, Chelsea insist the fixture was taken seriously, with senior players like Reece James, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sánchez starting.
The draw saw mixed performances from younger players such as Jorrel Hato, Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, and Jamie Gittens, all of whom were substituted at halftime. Still, Chelsea believe giving minutes to emerging talents is vital for their development under Maresca’s system.
The club’s leadership, aligned with Maresca and the sporting directors, prioritises long-term stability and player fitness over short-term results. They point to the manager’s careful handling of Reece James and Wesley Fofana as examples of his success in maintaining squad health.
Chelsea host Wolves on Saturday, with Maresca expected to restore a stronger lineup as they return from their taxing midweek journey.
