Canadian privacy officials concluded that TikTok does not adequately safeguard children’s information. They said the platform allows underage access and misuses sensitive data.
Children continue to use the platform
Hundreds of thousands of Canadian children access TikTok each year. The company maintains the app is not meant for users under 13. Investigators found that many minors still use the service.
Personal data exploited for advertising
The investigation revealed that TikTok collected sensitive information from large numbers of children. The platform then used this data to target ads and shape content. Officials warned that such practices could harm young users.
TikTok pledges stronger safeguards
The company announced plans to introduce new protections for Canadian users. It disputed some findings but did not clarify which conclusions it contests.
Commissioner warns of risks
Privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne led the inquiry with other officials. He said TikTok gathers vast amounts of user data, including from minors. He warned that targeted content and ads may negatively affect children.
Mr Dufresne confirmed TikTok agreed to improve measures against underage access. The company also promised to clarify how it handles children’s personal information.
Company responds
A spokesperson said the platform welcomed the investigation. They noted that Canadian officials accepted several proposals to strengthen protections. The spokesperson added that TikTok remains committed to privacy and transparency despite disputing some conclusions.
Global scrutiny intensifies
The Canadian findings add to worldwide pressure on TikTok. Governments are questioning its impact on children and raising national security concerns. The Chinese-owned company and Beijing deny all allegations.
In the United States, former President Donald Trump discussed TikTok with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Talks included a possible takeover of TikTok’s US operations by American firms.
In Europe, the European Commission ordered staff in 2023 to delete TikTok from corporate phones and devices. Officials said the measure aimed to protect data and strengthen cybersecurity.
