Paris Saint Germain have signed Belgium winger Mika Godts from Ajax in a deal worth up to €55 million. The move adds another young attacking player to the squad of the European champions.
PSG confirmed the transfer on Saturday. Godts has signed a five year contract with the French club. Ajax said the deal has a value of up to €55 million, including possible add ons.
The PSG Mika Godts transfer comes as the club continues to build its squad for the new season. PSG won the Champions League last season and are now looking to stay strong in France and Europe.
Godts said he was proud to join PSG. He also said he was excited to play at the Parc des Princes and meet the club’s fans.
The 21 year old winger enjoyed a strong season with Ajax. He scored 17 goals and made 13 assists in the Dutch Eredivisie during his breakout campaign.
His form also earned him a place with the Belgium national team. Godts made his senior debut in a friendly against the United States in March. He was later left out of Belgium’s squad for the World Cup this summer.
Ajax said the club had hoped to keep Godts for another season. Technical director Jordi Cruyff said the Dutch club did not want to lose the young winger.
Cruyff also said Godts had reached a high level at Ajax. That form, he added, made it likely that major European clubs would show interest.
Godts joined Ajax as a young player and developed into an important part of the first team. His goals and assists helped him gain attention across Europe.
His move to PSG now gives him a chance to play at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. It also puts him in a squad with high expectations after a major season for the French side.
The signing was confirmed on the same day PSG announced another major deal. The French club also completed the signing of Spanish forward Ferran Torres from Barcelona.
That transfer is reported to have a total value of about €50 million. The two deals show PSG’s plans to add more attacking quality before the new season.
Godts could also become part of a wider change in PSG’s attack. There is still uncertainty over the future of winger Bradley Barcola.
Liverpool are reported to have Barcola high on their list of targets as they search for a new wide forward. Early talks have also taken place with people close to the player.
PSG’s decision to sign Godts may give the club more depth on the wings. It could also help the team prepare for a long season with domestic and European games.
For Godts, the transfer is the biggest step of his career so far. He now moves from the Dutch league to a PSG team that will face strong pressure to win major trophies again.
His five year contract also gives PSG a long term option on a player who is still only 21. After his impressive season at Ajax, the club will hope his form can continue in Paris.
Godts will now begin a new chapter with the European champions. His first season at PSG will be closely watched as he looks to prove that his Ajax form can translate to the highest level of European football.
