The United Nations General Assembly strongly supported a resolution on Friday calling for a two-state solution.
The measure backed recognition of an independent Palestinian state while condemning Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel.
It also denounced Israel’s siege and starvation in Gaza, which created a humanitarian disaster.
Out of 193 members, 142 voted in favour of the New York Declaration, 10 opposed, and 12 abstained.
Resolution Calls for Palestinian Authority Rule
France and Saudi Arabia introduced the resolution, which envisions the Palestinian Authority governing all Palestinian territories.
It demands the creation of a transitional administrative committee after a ceasefire in Gaza.
The declaration states Hamas must surrender its weapons to the Palestinian Authority and release all hostages.
UN Mission Proposed to Safeguard Civilians
The resolution recommends deploying a UN-backed mission to protect Palestinian civilians and guarantee safety for Israelis as well.
It outlines support for transferring governance to the Palestinian Authority, while monitoring the ceasefire and future peace process.
