Military Incursion Sparks Alarm
Polish officials have announced that Russian military aircraft violated the safety perimeter of an oil platform in the Baltic Sea. The Ministry of Defence described the jets’ actions as unsafe and conducted without prior coordination, adding to a growing record of airspace breaches that have raised tensions in the region.
NATO Intervenes Over Estonian Airspace
In a related incident, NATO confirmed that Italian F-35 fighters intercepted Russian MiG-31 jets over Estonia near Vaindloo Island. The Russian aircraft reportedly entered without flight plans, deactivated their transponders, and did not communicate with local air traffic authorities. Estonia called the move a brazen provocation and formally protested to Russian diplomats.
European Union Responds
The European Union condemned the airspace violations, describing them as dangerous provocations. In response, the EU introduced its 19th sanctions package, targeting Russian financial institutions, military-affiliated companies, LNG exports, and cryptocurrency platforms. The plan also includes a complete ban on Russian LNG imports by January 2027, highlighting growing European concern over Russian military actions in the Baltic.
