Officials Flag Potential Coordinated Assault
Between Wednesday night and early Thursday, drones were observed over four Danish airports, prompting concerns of a deliberate operation. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the activity as organized and likely conducted by a skilled operator. Intelligence agencies pointed to similar drone incidents across Europe, suggesting possible Russian involvement, although no group has claimed responsibility.
Flights Disrupted at Civilian and Military Locations
The drone sightings caused interruptions at Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sønderborg, and Skrydstrup airports. Aalborg, which also functions as a military facility, faced the longest delays, while Skrydstrup, hosting Danish fighter jets, was likewise affected. Drones were reportedly illuminated during their flights, but authorities chose not to engage them. Officials confirmed that there was no immediate threat to the public.
Denmark Considers Stronger Drone Countermeasures
In response to the incidents, Danish authorities are exploring legislation allowing critical infrastructure operators to neutralize drones. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is coordinating with NATO and EU partners on regional defenses, including discussions about a potential “drone wall.” Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard stated the flyovers appear intended to create fear and division, emphasizing the importance of bolstering protective measures at sensitive sites.
