Romania Confirms Decrease in American Troop Rotations
The United States plans to scale back its military presence across parts of Eastern Europe, according to an announcement from Romania’s Ministry of Defense. The decision affects U.S. rotational forces positioned at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base and several nearby NATO sites. Although officials did not specify how many service members would depart, Romania confirmed that around 1,000 U.S. troops will continue to operate within the country under NATO coordination.
Washington Describes Move as Strategic Realignment
American defense officials emphasized that the reduction is not a withdrawal but a strategic rebalancing of military assets following a review of European deployments. NATO representatives echoed this message, noting that U.S. troop numbers on the continent remain significantly higher than before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The adjustment, they said, aims to better align resources with evolving security needs.
NATO Allies Assess Regional Implications
The announcement drew attention from nearby nations such as Hungary, Slovakia, and Bulgaria, which also host U.S. and allied forces along NATO’s eastern frontier. Defense analysts believe the change signals a shift toward a more flexible deterrence model while maintaining strong transatlantic ties. Romanian officials reaffirmed that defense cooperation and joint exercises with American units will continue as planned.
